5 Repertoire

Judging will be based on the contestants’ performances of their selection from the repertoire of each round specified below.

5-1 Round 1

Contestants play the following pieces in the order of (A), (B) and (C). The performance time shall be between 20 minutes and 25 minutes in total. The repetition shall be at one's discretion.
* The contestants may be disqualified if the performance time is less than or exceeds the designated time.

(A) J.S.Bach: one piece from "The Well-Tempered Clavier", vol. I or vol. II

(B) Chopin: one piece from either Etude Op. 10 (except for Op. 10-3 and 10-6) or Op. 25 (except for Op. 25-7)
* Contestants may play the same piece that they performed during the Initial Selection.

(C) One or multiple pieces composed from 1900 on
* Contestants may NOT play the same piece that they performed during the Initial Selection.

5-2 Round 2

Contestants will be required to play the following pieces in the order of (A) and (B). The performance time shall be no more than 45 minutes in total. The repetition shall be at one's discretion.

(A) All the movements of Mozart's sonata selected from the followings:

  • Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, K. 310
  • Piano Sonata No. 13 in B♭ major, K. 333
  • Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor, K. 457
  • Piano Sonata No. 17 in B♭ major, K. 570
  • Piano Sonata No. 18 in D major, K. 576

(B) Piece(s) of your choice by Schumann, Brahms, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, or Liszt
* You may choose pieces by multiple composers.
* For a sonata, you shall play all the movements.

5-3 Round 3

Contestants play the following pieces in the order of (A), (B) and (C).

(A) All the movements of Beethoven's sonata selected from the followings:
The repetition shall be as instructed in the parenthesis. Any deviation from the instruction is subject to deduction.

  • Piano Sonata No. 18 in E♭ major, Op. 31-3 (NO repetition, da capo in the 3rd movement to be played)
  • Piano Sonata No. 21 in C major, Op. 53 (NO repetition)
  • Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 (the 2nd movement: with repetition, the 3rd movement: repetition of coda)
  • Piano Sonata No. 28 in A major, Op. 101 (repetition in the 8th bar of the beginning of the 2nd movement to be played, da capo to be played; other repetitions are omitted)
  • Piano Sonata No. 31 in A♭ major, Op. 110 (repetition in the 2nd movement)
  • Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111 (the 1st movement: NO repetition, the 2nd movement: with repetition)

(B) A commissioned piece for the 5th Takamatsu International Piano Competition

(C) Contestants will select one of the piano quartets listed below and play with the string players designated by the organizer. Use the scores of Henle edition for Schumann and Brahms and the score of International Music edition for Faure. Repetition is NOT played except for the 3rd movement of Schumann.

  • Schumann: Piano Quartet in E♭ major, Op. 47
  • Brahms: Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60
  • Faure: Quartet No. 1 in C minor, Op.15

5-4 Final

Contestants will be required to play one concerto of their choice from the list below with the orchestra designated by the organizer.

(F) Saint-Saëns:

(G) Tchaikovsky:
Piano Concerto No.1 in B♭ minor, Op. 23

(H) Grieg:
Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16

( I ) Rachmaninov:
Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18
Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30

* The musical score for the commissioned piece will be sent to contestants with the Initial Selection results.

* Contestants may not perform this piece publicly before this competition.
