Chair Yujiro AYADA

I would like to extend a hearty welcome and thanks to all of you who have gathered in Takamatsu from around the world for the 5th Takamatsu International Piano Competition.

Due to the spread of COVID-19, we were unable to welcome contestants and judges from abroad for the March 2022 event, so we were forced to postpone it by one year to February 2023. In addition, due to the renovation of Sunport Hall Takamatsu, the event will be held at a new venue, Rexxam Hall. We would like to thank you again for your understanding and cooperation.

Now, Takamatsu International Piano Competition was established in 2006 as the third international piano competition in Japan, and has been held every four years, with this year marking the fifth. In 2015, the competition became a member of “the World Federation of International Music Competitions”, a global network of international piano competitions, and has grown to be highly regarded both nationally and internationally.

Despite COVID-19 disaster situation, we received 245 applications from 26 countries and regions around the world, and a rigorous preliminary screening was conducted.

The first round of judging will now begin with 50 participants who have passed the preliminary screening. We are very much looking forward to the performances of the selected pianists, which we are sure will bring deep emotions to everyone.

The competition is made possible by the support of Kagawa Prefecture, Takamatsu City, and many other companies, organizations, and volunteers, and is based on the slogan "Shared Dreams, Shared Emotions”. We hope that this competition, which supports young pianists aiming for the world stage, will continue to be loved and nurtured by the local community as a place for international cultural exchange rooted in the community.

Finally, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Kagawa Prefecture, Takamatsu City, and the many companies, organizations, and people involved for their tremendous support and cooperation in making this event possible.
