Q17. Repertoire of Round 1

I would like to play “Six Moments Musicaux” by Rachmaninoff as a repertoire of Round 1 (C) “one or multiple pieces composed from 1900 on”. The second piece was revised in 1940 and is this considered as a piece composed from 1900 on?

A.17
Playing the second piece of “Six Moments Musicaux” only, which is revised in 1940, is considered meeting the condition of (C).
It is recommended to make a program which strictly observes the total performance time including the pieces of Bach and Chopin.

Q16. Application procedure

I am currently having trouble with the URL link for the registration.  The link is not working properly for the registration.
Can I register and apply for the competition in any other way?

Q15. Registration fee

Do I need to pay a registration fee?

A.15
You don't have to pay the fee when you apply to the Initial Selection.
The competition fee of 20,000 yen should be paid by a person who has passed the Initial Selection and will participate in the competition.

Q14.Recording of Initial Selection

Is it possible to submit old recordings for Initial Selection?

A14.
The recordings must be done after October 1, 2020.

Q13. Recording of Initial Selection and Repertoire of Round 2

Can the recordings for initial selection be made in different places or do I need to record in one hall?

In addition, which Mozart variation cycles have to be chosen in the competition?

A13.
You may record the pieces in different venues. Please refer to Application Guideline 4-3 Recording of the Performance when filming.

There are no variations required in Round 2. Please choose one Mozart Sonata from Application Guideline 5-2 Round 2.

Q12. Recording of the Initial Selection

Do I need the preliminary recording made in one take or it can be compiled videos from different concerts?

A12.
You can record three pieces without stopping or separately. Please remember that the performance of one piece should be recorded without stopping the camera.

Your recoding information such as date and place needs to be written on the DVD you are sending. In the case of the online application, upload each piece and enter the information in the designated place.

Q11. Repertoire of Round 2

For the piece of choice (either by Schumann, Liszt, etc.), does it have to be arranged specifically for solo piano, or is a transcription/ arrangement by one of the said composers permissible?

A11.
We strongly recommend you to play the original versions.
However, if you insist on choosing transcribed works, the arranger will be considered as the composer.
For example, Lieder transcriptions of Schumann or Schubert arranged by Liszt will be counted as Liszt’s Work. Bach’s Chaconne for the left hand arranged by Brahms will be considered as Brahms.
Chopin Variations by Rachmaninov is not suited for this category. Chopin-Godowski Etudes are also not suited for this category.

Q10. Recording of repertoire of the Initial Selection

Can three pieces of the repertoire for the Initial Selection be recorded on different days and different places?

A10.
It is perfectly acceptable if three pieces are recorded on different days and different places as long as the recordings are made after October 1, 2020.

I am currently in school and I can not find the field to enter the name of my teacher at school. Isn’t it necessary to give my current teacher’s name?

A9.
You can enter your current teacher’s name in the “Music Education Background” field with your school name.

Q8. Video Data

Do I need to make Zip files from a DVD?

A8.
Compress a VIDEO_TS folder to make Zip files. For more details, see Initial Selection <Recording of the Performance> in Application Guideline, website, etc.

Q7. Video Data

I can not upload video data.

A7.
Compress a VIDEO_TS folder for each recorded piece and make three Zip files. Then, upload each of the three Zip files.

Q6. Eligibility

I’d like to take part in your competition. But I didn’t find any information about the age of participants. Can you help me?

A6.
Eligibility is stated in 3. Application on Application Guidelines in our website, which is:

Individuals born between January 1, 1987 and January 1, 2007.

Please check the website one more time.

Q5. Question about Round 1

The (C) category in Round 1 requires “One or multiple pieces composed from 1900 on”, but I am wondering if this could be selected one or two movements from a large sonata, or does it have to be a complete sonata with all the movements? It will help me to decide my choices for requirements (a) and (b).

A5.
One may select one or several movements from a sonata (for example 2nd and 3rd movement from the Prokofiev Sonata #7), but we „recommend“playing a whole sonata in one piece. In the case of a group or suite, you may also choose the piece(s) from plural composers (for example Ravel Scarbo from Gaspard de la Nuit, and Suggestion Diabolique from Prokofiev Op.4)

Q4. Question about DVD recording for Initial Selection

Should I record all three works in one video without stopping? Or can I record them separately in three videos?
Moreover, do I need to specify the recording information (Date, Place, Name of work..etc) in the video before playing? Or should I just write the information on paper?

A4.
You can record three pieces without stopping or separately. Please remember that the performance of one piece should be recorded without stopping the camera.
Your recording information such as date and place needs to be written on the DVD you are sending. In the case of an online application, enter the information in the designated place.

Is a letter of recommendation from a teacher necessary for the application?

A3.
A letter of recommendation is NOT necessary.

A2.

Q1. Question about Round 1

Repertoire (C) in Round 1 states “One or multiple pieces composed from 1990 on”. Does this include playing some movements (not all) from a sonata or pieces composed by different composers?

A1.
In Repertoire (C)You can play multiple pieces by several composers including individual movement(s) from a sonata or a large-scale work as long as you do not exceed the specified time limit. Please note that the total performance time of Round 1 is between 20 minutes and 25 minutes.
