Q1. Is there any age limit?

No. Any individual who was born on or after 1st January, 1979 can apply.

Q2. Can I change the order of the pieces I play during the competition?

No. You will be required to play in order of (A), (B), and (C).

Q.3 DVD for preliminary audition have to arrived unitil September 20th. But Korean thanksgiving day is start on september 18th. So many office take a holiday before 18th. I can't use a post service at 18-22 days. So is it ok to arrive after 24th?

Application deadline is September 20th.
(Postmark September 20th is acceptable.)

Initial selection

Q1. Can I edit my DVD (in DVD-video format) for application? (about recording etc.)

You are not allowed to edit your DVD for application. The DVD shall be made for only this competition.
※ The camera must be fixed and your face and hands must be visible at the same time.
※ You need to record your performance of two pieces on one DVD.
※ Please write your name, the names of the pieces, and where and when the recording was made.
※ Recording shall be made after 1st October, 2012.

Q2. May I record the pieces into separate tracks (not all the pieces in one track)?

Yes, you may record the pieces into separate tracks. Please note, however, that the DVD must be in DVD-video format.

Q3. Do I have to record both performances continuously?

You can stop the camera to suspend the recording between piece(A) and piece(B).
If you would like to, you can record two pieces of your choice without a break.
It is acceptable to do the recording on different days at different recording venues.

Q4. Is the performance time limited?

No. Particular time limit is not set.

Q5. When will the Initial Selection results be sent out?

Results of the Initial selection are scheduled to be sent out to all the applicants on Monday, 16th December, 2013. The result will also be posted on the official website of the TIPC on the same day.

Q.6 Are there any words of advice or caution when recording the performance for preliminary selection with a video camera and saving the recorded data in a DVD?

(1)Place the video camera 1 - 2 meter away from the piano and on the right side so that your face and hands are visible on the camera.

(2)We recommend you to use a personal computer when you save your recording in a DVD.

(3)If you use a DVD recorder to save your recording, please finalize the DVD and make sure that the DVD is playable on a PC.

(4)Please note that we do not accept any other recording media other than a DVD-R.

Q7. Which format do I need in my DVD? NTSC or PAL or something?

Japanese DVD player’s system is NTSC.
However, we are going to play DVD with a PC.
Please finalize the DVD and make sure that the DVD is playable on a PC.

Round 1

Q1. Regarding (C), how many pieces composed after 1900 can I play? For example, can I play a group of pieces, e.g. Debussy Preludes?

You are required to select only one piece composed on or after 1900.
The performance time (A, B, C) should be no more than 20 minutes in total.

We have received the questions and inquiries regarding the piece to be played at Round 1. 
We stated and informed you that you would need to select and play one piece composed after 1900 (see (C) in Round 1 in the Competition). However, we decided to change this rule as below.

<Repertoire of Round 1>
(C) Piece composed after 1900: you can play more than one piece composed by different composers if the performance ends within the time limit.
You will have 20 minutes to play one piece of Bach (A), one piece of Chopin (B), and several pieces composed after 1900 (C). You need to play in order of (A), (B), and (C).

In all Rounds, please note that you will be disqualified if your performance exceeds the time limit. 

Q2. Regarding (C), can I play one of movements from a sonata composed on or after 1900?

Yes. You can play one or full movements of your choice. Please note, however, that your performance time of A, B, and C shall be within 20 minutes in total.

Q3. Is it required to repeat the pieces?

No. You can decide whether or not to repeat. Please note, however, that you need to finish your performance within 20 minutes in total.

Q4. Whether Suite Bergamasque (Debussy) is considered as a composition after 1900? (started composing from 1890, finished and published in 1905).

Suite Bergamasque (Debussy) is considered as a composition after 1900.
So,you can play it for the first round.

Round 2

Q1. Regarding (B): Piece(s) of your choice by Schumann, Brahms, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Chopin, or Liszt, can I play the revised version, eg. one piece of Mendelssohn revised by Rakhmaninov?

No. You will be required to play the original version only.

Q2. Regarding (B): Is it possible to play full movements of a sonata?

Yes. Please note, however, that you will be required to play (A) and (B) within 45 minutes.

Q3.Regarding (A) : Does the sonata by Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven mean a single movement or a complete sonata?

It means "all the movements of a sonata".

Q1. Regarding (G): Rakhmaninov Piano Concerto No.1, Is it the revised version?

Yes. You will be required to play the revised version.

Q1. Will the opportunities to practice be provided during the Competition?

Yes. The following practice opportunities shall be provided to you free of charge during the Competition.
1. Four-hour practice a day in a room equipped with a piano starting from the day after the Registration date.
2. One rehearsal opportunity with an orchestra will be provided for the Semifinal and Final Rounds. As a rule, the rehearsal time will be limited to 40 minutes in the Semifinal and one hour and half in the Final Rounds (discussion with the conductor is included in this rehearsal time).

Q2. How can I get an invitation letter to obtain a Japanese Visa to enter Japan?

The Secretariat will send you an invitation letter upon request. It may take a while to prepare and send the invitation letter, so please contact the Secretariat as early as possible.
