Performance Pieces

Initial selection

Please select 2 pieces from groups (A) and (B) listed below, and record them onto a CD (or a cassette, a MD, a DAT).
※DVD and videotape format are not permitted.
Please write your name, the names of the pieces and the date and the recording location on it.
The recording must have been made after the 1st Sept. 2008
(A) Chopin: 1 piece from either Etude Op.10 or Op.25
(B) Scarlatti: 1 piece from Sonata

Round 1

You will be required to play pieces from each of the groups listed below (A), (B), and (C). The performance time should be no more than 20 minutes in total.
(A) 1 piece from Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier", vol.Ⅰ or vol.Ⅱ
(B) 1 study piece by Chopin, Liszt, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Stravinsky or Prokofiev
(C) the 1st movement from any sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Clementi

Round 2

You will be required to play pieces from each of the groups listed below (A), (B), and (C). The performance time should be no more than 40 minutes in total.
(A) The remainder of the sonata which you performed for Round 1
(B) Piece(s) of your choice by Schumann, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Schubert, Chopin, or Liszt
     (You may choose pieces by multiple composers. In the case of a sonata,
     you may choose which movement(s) to play)
(C) 1 piece of your choice by Debussy, Faure, Ravel, Granados, Albeniz, or de Falla

Round 3

You will be required to play both (A) and (B).
(A) The piece commissioned for this competition (about 6 minutes in length)
     Commissioned Composer for this competition: Ken FUJIMITSU
     *We will send the musical score to contestants three months before the competition.
       You may not perform this piece publicly before this competition.
(B) Mozart (1 concerto of your choice from the list below,
      to be performed with the chamber instruments)
     Piano Concerto No.11 in F major K.413
     Piano Concerto No.12 in A major K.414
     Piano Concerto No.13 in C major K.415
     Piano Concerto No.14 in Eb major K.449

Final

1 concerto of your choice from the list below to be performed with orchestral accompaniment

     Piano Concerto No.1 in C major Op.15
     Piano Concerto No.2 in Bb major Op.19
     Piano Concerto No.3 in C minor Op.37
     Piano Concerto No.4 in G major Op.58

Chopin:
     Piano Concerto No.1 in E minor Op.11
     Piano Concerto No.2 in F minor Op.21
Schumann:
     Piano Concerto in A minor Op.54
Liszt:
     Piano Concerto No.1 in Eb major

Saint-Saëns:

  • All performances must be from memory.
  • All performances will be open to the general public.
  • Parts of the piece may be cut for time purposes at the discretion of the jury.
