Naoto Otomo graduated from the Toho Gakuen School of Music having studied conducting under Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Tadaaki Odaka and Morihiro Okabe. While still a student at Toho Gakuen, he was named Assistant Conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and upon the recommendation of its members, made his debut with the orchestra at the age of 22. He is currently Music Director of the Gunma Symphony Orchestra, Honorary Guest Conductor of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Conductor Laureate of the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, and Music Advisor to the Ryukyu Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, he was appointed as the first Music Director of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan concert hall, a post he held for 8 years.

Outside Japan, he has appeared with the Colorado Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2012 he conducted the opening concert of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra and has appeared regularly since. In June 2012, he also appeared as a guest conductor with the Lorraine National Orchestra, in a concert that was highly acclaimed.  He was invited to George Enescu International Festival in 2013 where he conducted String Octet in C Major, Op.7.  Critics praised this performance, declaring that“this octet has been performed several times, but this is by far the best,” and “the performance by a Japanese orchestra gives hope to Western music.” There is much anticipation of his future work in both Europe and the United States. 

Naoto Otomo is the recipient of the 8th Akio Watanabe Music Foundation Award (2000) and the 7th Hideo Saito Memorial Fund Award (2008).

Seto Philharmonic Orchestra

The Seto Philharmonic Orchestra was established in November 2001 as a non-profit organization to stimulate musical culture throughout the region. In order to pursue this goal further and gain wider support, the organization became a general incorporated association in April 2009, and then, a public interest incorporated association in January 2010. Since its first regular performance, the orchestra has provided opportunities for people to experience music firsthand in a variety of forms, including ensemble performances at community centers. In music appreciation programs provided at elementary and junior high schools in particular, the orchestra incorporates such elements as conducting experience and joint sessions with school bands. These efforts are aimed at fostering the joy of music in young people, thereby expanding and consolidating the base of music lovers in Kagawa. As Shikoku’s only professional orchestra, the orchestra receives many requests for concerts from businesses and local government organizations. It was awarded the Kagawa Prefecture Culture and Art Encouragement Prize in 2014.
