The Initial Selection will be conducted on the basis of the documents submitted by the applicants and a DVD recording (in DVD-video format) of the applicants performing the set pieces.

Repertoire for the Initial Selections

Applicants should select two pieces, one from group (A) and one from group (B) listed below, record them onto a DVD, and send them to the Competition Office. 

(A) CHOPIN: one piece from either Etude Op. 10 or Op. 25
(B) LISZT, SCRIABIN, RACHMANINOV, DEBUSSY, STRAVINSKY or PROKOFIEV: one piece from Etudes

Recording of the Performance

• The performances should have been recorded after the 1st October 2016.
• The camera shall be fixed and the face and hands of the performer shall be visible at the same time.
• One piece shall be recorded without stopping the camera. When sending the CD by post, two pieces shall be recorded in one DVD-R.
• Any DVDs with editing shall not be included in the initial selections.
• Any DVDs with recordings other than the set pieces shall not be included in the initial selections.
• Computers will be used to view DVDs. Where possible, use a computer to record onto a DVD. When using a DVD recorder, the DVD must be finalized. Before sending a DVD, confirm it can be viewed on a computer.
• Applicants shall clearly write their name, the name of the piece of music, the date it was recorded and the place of the performance on the DVD. When (A) and (B) have different performance dates and/or places of performance, their respective date and place of performance shall be clearly indicated.
• Online applicants shall upload a compressed file to the VIDEO_TS folder.

*Recorded media received that is not DVD-R will not be accepted.
*The DVD system in Japan is NTSC.
*The DVD-video format standard was established by DVD Forum as those able to be viewed on regular DVD players and computers. When this format is used, files show on the computer as containing the folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. The VIDEO_TS folder contains the files ***.IFO and ***.VOB.
*The preliminary judging is the beginning of the judging process. Please record the performance with the same preparedness as the actual performance.

Notification of Initial Selection Results

The results of the Initial Selections will be sent to all applicants individually by Tuesday, 5th December 2017.
*Applicants who are successful in the Initial Selections will be sent information about the competition and a Consent Form for Competition Entry as well as the score of the commissioned piece.
