for the Takamatsu International Piano Competition
The rules described hereunder are based on the Rules and Regulations of the Takamatsu International Piano Competition Organizing Committee (hereafter “the Rules and Regulations”) and stipulate all the items required for judging the Competition.
Article 1: Structure of the Competition
The Competition consists of the Initial Selection Round, Preliminary Rounds 1, 2, and 3 and theFinal Round.
1. Initial Selection Round
The purpose of the Initial Selection Round is to select the 40 participants who will proceed to Preliminary Round 1. It will be adjudicated by an Initial Selection Round Jury in accordance with the Rules and Regulations.
- The Initial Selection Round will be judged solely on the basis of an audio/visual DVD submitted by the contestants.
- The identity of each Contestant will not be made known to the Jury.
- Contestants will be evaluated by increments of 1 point up to a maximum of 100 points.
- The rank of each Contestant will be calculated by combining the total of all the jury members’ scores.
- The Initial Selection Round will determine which Contestants will proceed to Preliminary Round 1. In the event that 2 or more Contestants at the cutoff line receive the same score, the Jury will consult.
The Office will promptly calculate the scores of each Contestant in the presence of the Music Committee Chair, or a member of the Working Committee appointed by the Music Committee Chair, and submit a list of the Contestants’ scores to the Initial Selection Jury.
- The Initial Selection Jury can select runners-up.
2. Preliminary Rounds (Round 1, Round 2, Round 3)
The purpose of the Preliminary Rounds is to determine whether or not each Contestant will proceed to the next round. The Preliminary Rounds will be judged by the Jury for the Performance Rounds (hereafter the Jury) as stipulated in the Rules and Regulations. Before judging commences, the Jury Chair will convene a meeting of the Jury to confirm the method of judging.
The number of Contestants proceeding to each Round of the Competition will be 20 for Round 1, 10 for Round 2, and 5 for Round 3.
- The Jury will score each Contestant by awarding points in increments of 0.5 up to a maximum of 25. As a reference, the minimum line is 14 points with 20 points or more being required to qualify for the subsequent Round. However, the Jury cannot judge a Contestant stipulated in Article 3 Item 3 of these Judging Rules.
- To determine the rank of each Contestant, the lowest and highest scores will be eliminated, and the scores of the remaining jury members will be totaled to calculate the Contestant’s average score. In the event that the lowest or highest score is awarded by 2 or more jury members, only 1 member’s score will be eliminated.
- The Jury will determine the rank of each Contestant in the order of the Contestant’s average scores from the highest to the lowest. If several Contestants are at the pass line, the Jury will consult.
The Office will promptly calculate the average score of each Contestant in the presence of the Music Committee Chair or a member of the Working Committee appointed by the Music Committee Chair, and submit a list with the average scores to the Jury without revealing the names of the Contestants.
3. The Final Round
The Final Round will be judged by the Jury for the Performance Rounds as stipulated in the Rules and Regulations.
The Jury will vote to rank the Contestants from 1st to 5th place, and the decision will be made by a majority vote.
However, votes will not be cast to allow a Contestant stipulated under Article 3 Item 3 of these Judging Rules to place in the Competition.
The Contestants will be voted for in order of 1st place to 5th place, one at a time in the same way.
Article 2 Piano Selection and Order of Performance
- The Contestants will draw lots during the briefing session to determine the order of performance.
- The Music Chair shall draw letters of the alphabet to determine the order of the performances by the first letter of the performers’ surnames.

- Contestants are permitted to change their choice of piano for the following round and for the final within one hour of the results of the previous round being announced. However, trying out the pianos will not be possible.
Article 3 Judging Principles
- The jury members shall evaluate the performance of all Contestants in the Competition, excluding those stipulated in Article 3 Item 3. If a jury member is absent for any part of the performance, the evaluation of that particular jury member for that particular round will be considered invalid.
- The jury members are prohibited from having any contact with Contestants during the period in which the Competition is being held. However, this rule does not apply to any Contestants who have been eliminated from the Competition at an earlier stage.
- Any jury member who has provided private instruction to any of the Contestants for more than one month within the past two years, or whose relative is a Contestant, must inform the Jury the first time the Jury meets. A jury member may not discuss such a Contestant with any other jury members.
